Chuck Close - Work in Progress - Update #6: Finished?

Thought I'd start posting the portrait in stages. Sorry for the poor quality photo, I'll make sure the next one is taken in natural light. Hopefully it's overcast tomorrow.

Working my way down I'm dreading the beard...

The beard is proving to be a lot more time consuming than anticipated. Experimenting with a few different ideas on how to expedite it, the overall effect seems to work when viewing from a distance. Might do the top of the head first and come back to the beard so I don't lose my mind.

Although I'm quite happy with the skin tones and texture, now that I've done the top, I can no longer avoid doing the beard...also starting to stress about the time. I have invested way too much time into this one drawing to the detriment of the others.

On the plus side, this is shaping up to be my finest work using pencil to date.

Getting there, though I'm worried the beard is starting to look more like fur than hair. Strands too short maybe? I dunno.

I think it's as good as I can get it without obsessing...too much.

P.S. Aaarrrghh! Fkn Paper fold! (top right corner...made me rage!)
